Wear Your Confidence - How to empower yourself through fashion
Hey ladies, happy International Women’s Day! It’s the perfect time to appreciate and love ourselves for who we are and how far we have come in life as women. Neonmello has always prided in the motto ‘Wear Your Confidence’ and today, we want to share the importance and tips of empowering ourselves through fashion! (+ girl boss fashion ideas that are perfect for this special day)
1. Make your own rules
We all know the basic ‘rules’ of fashion - always match the colour of accessories, don’t combine more than 3 colours in an outfit, wear makeup to complete the look etc. True, these are all helpful guides on looking more put together but sometimes sticking too much to such rules and trends can actually limit our individuality.
A few years ago, I came across a girl (who is also now my good friend) who really loved wearing cute, kiddish bear hair clips and funny looking sandals that had people staring at them when she walked along the streets. Another friend who was with us pointed out that her accessories didn't match the outfit at all. The bear hair clip girl said, “Well, I like it this way! It’s my style and I’m happy with it.” That hit me hard as I, too, was someone who cared a lot about trends and never wore anything but trendy clothes even though I didn’t necessarily like them. The friend’s words made me realise this - clothes should be worn to empower us as unique individuals, not to be a part of the trend or society’s rules. What’s wrong with wearing a bear hair clip if I like it? So what if I wear a combination of colours that people normally won’t go for? By making your own rules for fashion, you actually embrace your own identity and individuality through a fashion that is unique to you! There’s no right or wrong for fashion - you simply make your own rules💪
2. Love your body
With how society emphasises skinniness and hour-glass shape as the definition of beauty, I’m sure many of us struggle with the worry of not achieving the ideal body that will make us look good in our clothes. But we are wrong about this - it’s not the body that makes us look good and feel good in our clothes, it’s our self-confidence🥰
To achieve self-confidence, it’s actually easier than you think! We simply need to learn to value and love our bodies. Everyone’s bodies come in different shapes and sizes and we should celebrate the differences instead of trying to define one body type as the only beautiful one. By appreciating your own body, you’ll find yourself looking and feeling beautiful no matter the clothes you wear.
3. Experiment with different styles!
Minimalist, Y2K, streetwear, dressy…there’s so many fashion styles! And how many did you actually try before? Similar to establishing our own fashion rules, experimenting with different styles help us to understand ourselves!
Years ago, I used to stick to athleisure style so most of the time I was just wearing a hoodie top and leggings. It never occurred to me back then on why I should try other styles. But gradually as I became more interested in fashion, I decided to try other styles as well out of curiosity. It felt unfamiliar and also a little awkward when I first tried out a totally different style but after a while, I realised there’s a few types of styles that I actually like! It helped me to realise I am not just limited to athleisure, but I can switch it up (or even mix athleisure with other styles). Not only did it make fashion exciting and personal to me, it also taught me to go out of my comfort zone in other areas of my life like my careers and studies. Fashion can have such a powerful impact on us! Of course, that doesn’t mean that we go and shop for every different style - on the contrary, it’s more effective (and not costly) to do window-shopping when it comes to trying out a different style so that you can try them on and then decide from there whether you want to buy it. When you have the time, why not try a different style from what you usually wear?
